Former Councilwoman Announces Her
Candidacy for Washoe County Commission

Toni Harsh announced today her intention to run for the Washoe County Commission District 1 seat currently held by Jim Galloway who is not seeking re-election. She believes that her experience and public record make her the best choice.

During her tenure as a Reno City Councilwoman from 2000 to 2004, Harsh accomplished improvements in public safety by increasing the number of police officers, improvements in Reno's neighborhoods by supporting beautification and cleanliness efforts, and improvements in the economy by her active involvement in repositioning the region as a destination attraction.
Harsh pledged to remain dedicated to open and responsive government, a good steward of public money and to protect and improve the quality of life for all Washoe County residents. She favors responsible managed development, as opposed to excessive sprawl growth that does not pay its own way. She is especially concerned about future growth impacts on our limited natural resources, such as water.

Harsh believes the priorities and values of the general public should be represented at the County Commission during this time of unprecedented growth in this region and has the experience to govern.
"There are important issues at stake in this election," Harsh said. "I believe that my candidacy offers a positive choice for the voters in this district."
Harsh, a businesswoman, is a life-long Republican and a resident of the Newlands Neighborhood in West Reno for almost 40 years. She spent much of her formative years at Lake Tahoe. Prior to serving on the council, she was a member of the City of Reno Financial Advisory Board and Vice President of Kirby Smith and Associates, a firm specializing in church finances and charity fund-raising. Harsh is one of the founders of Voices for Truckee Meadows, a citizen's advocacy group.

Ten year resident John Breternitz announced his candidacy for Galloway's seat in August. Breternitz, currently is executive vice president of Q and D Construction.

Washoe County Commission District 1 includes Northwest Reno, most of West Reno, Incline Village and Crystal Bay at Lake Tahoe.
