• I think people are reluctant to give up their right to choose. If they ever give up their right to choose, they would have to be convinced that whatever follows it, is something that they really trust.
  
  
• We have a strong tradition in our country of judicial independence and that’s what people worry about, with both campaign contributions or public outrage at a single decision. If a judge is going to be pushed and pressured, is that an issue for whether or not we have an independent judiciary? There are strong countervailing considerations.
